Our History
Grantham.in is an extension of Paresh Agencies, established by the Late Mr. M. H. Bhate in 1989. Paresh Agencies is a reputed, stand-alone Marathi bookstore proudly located in Pune’s famous Appa Balwant Chowk (ABC) – an area synonymous with books and literature.
The Late Mr. Bhate, affectionately known in the theatre world as Bhate Kaka, was deeply respected and loved for his vast knowledge of theatre-related books, scripts, and reference materials. Over the decades, he became the go-to person for artists, directors, producers, and researchers seeking authentic Marathi literature and theatre scripts. His passion for literature and his unwavering support for the performing arts community helped build the strong foundation that Grantham stands on today.
Bhate Kaka was more than just a bookseller – he was a “human filter” for books, especially theatre-related ones. If someone asked for, say, a comedy script with two female and four male characters, he would, within minutes, place a few perfect options in front of them. His intuitive understanding of both literature and theatre made him an invaluable resource for generations of readers and performers. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the idea of the search filters on the Grantham app and website was inspired by Bhate Kaka’s remarkable ability to “filter” and recommend the right books with precision and passion.
Over the years, the company has steadily grown, reaching thousands of readers across India and abroad, while continuing to uphold Bhate Kaka’s legacy of promoting Marathi language, literature, and theatre culture. Bhate Kaka’s son, Aniruddha Bhate, was raised among books and trained under his father’s watchful eye. In 2016, he took over the operations of Paresh Agencies. Recognising a growing generation of younger readers who preferred to read on the move, he launched the Grantham Mobile App in 2016 to bring Marathi literature to digital platforms.
After the success of the app, Aniruddha went on to create Grantham.in, a dedicated website designed to make books easily accessible online while also featuring carefully curated merchandise that celebrates Marathi culture – including calendars, coasters, bookmarks, and more.
